About AirPlay
AirPlay enables you to share media from an Apple mobile device to an Apple TV. You can use AirPlay to stream videos, share photos, and mirror exactly what's display on your mobile device screen.
AirPlay requirements
To use AirPlay, you will need:
- An iOS mobile device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod)
- An AirPlay compatible TV (Apple TV)
- The latest software version installed on all devices you plan to use
- Each mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network
- Media (photos, videos, or audio)
Optional:
- Airport Express
- Third-party audio source (speaker)
AirPlay-compatible speakers
AirPlay is compatible with these speakers:
- HomePod
- Speakers that displays “Works with Apple AirPlay” on the package
- Speakers connected to the Audio Out port on AirPort Express
- Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, and Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation)
Stream a video from iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
To stream a video from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, follow these steps:
- Connect your device to the same network that your AirPlay compatible TV is connected to.
- In your mobile device, find the video that you want to AirPlay.
- Tap the share icon.
Note: Third-party apps might use a different icon. - Select your Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV.
Using Screen Mirroring from iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
To view your iOS device's screen on your Apple TV, engage the Screen Mirroring Feature.
- Connect your device to the same network that your AirPlay compatible TV is connected to.
- Open the Control Center. (Depending on which version you have, you might need to swipe down from the upper-right corner or swipe up from the bottom of the screen.)
- Tap Screen Mirroring
- Select your Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV.
- (If you are prompted for an AirPlay passcode) Enter the passcode into your iOS device.
- (Optional) To fill your TV screen with the mirrored iOS device screen, change your TV's aspect ratio or zoom settings as needed.
When you are ready to stop mirroring: Open the Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring > Stop Mirroring.
Using AirPlay to stream videos from Mac
To stream videos from your Mac, complete the following instructions.
- Connect your Mac to the same network that your AirPlay compatible TV is connected to.
- On the Mac, open the platform that contains the video that you want to AirPlay.
- In the video playback controls, click the AirPlay icon.
- Select your Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV.
When you are ready to stop streaming the video: Click the blue and white AirPlay icon in the video playback controls and click Turn Off AirPlay.
Using AirPlay to stream music and podcasts from Mac
You can stream audio to your Apple TV, HomePod, or AirPlay-compatible speaker.
- Connect your Mac to the same network as your speaker.
- In the Apple Menu in the upper left corner, click System Preferences.
The System Preferences menu displays. - Click the Sound icon.
The Sound popup window displays. - Click Output.
- Select the speaker that you want to AirPlay audio to.
- (Option) If you would like the ability to quickly change the audio output, check the box next to "Show volume in menu bar."
Changing AirPlay devices
Sometimes your iOS device might automatically AirPlay a video to smart TV that you us often.
- To determine if the AirPlay device is already selected, open a video app and check to see if the blue and white displays in the upper-left corner. If you see it, it is selected.
- To AirPlay with a different device, tap the blue and white icon, and tap another device to select it. (You can also tap iPhone to stop streaming with AirPlay.)
