Troubleshooting: Slow Internet Connection

Fix a slow internet connection

To speed up your internet connection, try the following:

  1. Make sure your Wi-Fi connection has a strong signal.
  2. Clear your browser's cache and/or history.
  3. Restart your router and modem.
  4. Move closer to the modem or router (concrete walls, steel, and other connected devices can cause interference).
  5. Restart your device.
  6. Use an Ethernet cable to connect to your modem or router.

Internet connection maintenance

To keep your internet connection working, consider the following best practices:

  1. Restart your device at least once a week.
  2. Keep your modem/router and devices away from sources of interference (e.g. concrete walls or monitors).
  3. Add a Wi-Fi extender to improve coverage and signal strength if needed.
  4. Place your Wi-Fi gateway centrally in your home or office (keep it upright and off the floor).
  5. Update anti-virus software, drivers, firmware, and computer and device software.
  6. Turn off auto updates on apps, gaming consoles, and PCs.
